Malur Krishna Temple - Aug 7th 2014

A temple for some reason, missed out on, despite traversing the Bangalore - Mysore road so many times and so regularly, but 7th Aug 2014 - we decided to stop and have darshanam.

Morning 7.30am, just after Chennapatna, turn left at Dodda Malur (pronounced Maloor not Maalur), when we see a lovely gopuram. A relief from Krishna's life on the main temple wall greets us.

Once in, it is customary to first have the darshanam of Krishna - here as a baby on all fours, having a ball of butter in his hand, hence called Ambegalu Krishna or Navaneeta Krishna in black granite and onyx. After aarti and teertha moved along this ancient temple quadrangle with a well, to the Aprameya Swamy sannidhi. This idol is supposed to be carved out of a saligrama kallu.

A beautiful temple nearly 1600 years old as per the Archaka there along the banks of the Kanva river, today the river is not to be seen. There is historical evidence of Lord Rama having performed yagnas here and hence the Aprameya swamy temple here is also called Ramaprameya Swamy temple. This place has also recorded the visit of Sri Ramanujacharya, the great Vishishta Advaitha saint, with his idol being a part of the Utsavamurthy.

Purandaradasa the singing saint is said to have composed his famous kriti "Jagaddodharana Adisidale Yashoda" after seeing the beautiful idol of baby Krishna and a mantapa has been constructed at the place where he sat and composed this signal song.

The astonishing fact is that the entire temple complex has no foundation and is sitting on sand.

A lesson in history, an architectural puzzle, a throwback to our faith as Iyengars, a mesmerizing idol with the most beautiful eyes of baby Krishna and somehow the beautiful weather and life in total seemed perfect. Finished a super darshanam in a quiet and silent ambience with the silence only broken by the temple bells and came out to purchase a small idol of baby Krishna, some Iyengar condiments and continue on to Mysore.

  1. Thanks for the Information. Very well written. Are you a Professional blogger. I along with my wife and Elder brother and Manni had gone there in February 2018 and was impressed by its ambience. It needs more professional maintenance like history in many languages, better approach road and general upkeep of Popularising Iyengar condiments.
